Republican Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine is a so-called moderate Republican.  She was quoted in the April 29 Minneapolis Star Tribune as saying that “If the Republican Party fully intends to become a majority party in the future, it must move from the far right back toward the middle.”

The reason that the Republican Party lost so badly in 2008 is not because it is too far right.  The core principles of the Republican Party have never changed.  Democrats have moved further toward the left.  That is understandable given that the goal of the party is to create a much larger government and much more dependency upon government by Americans.  However, so-called moderates have also moved further toward the left.  This includes both Democrat and Republican moderates.  This also is understandable since moderates are really people with no real conviction and no real commitment to any standards or principles.  They follow the tide and today the tide is moving left.

The real reason the Republican Party lost in 2008 was because it didn’t hold true to its core values.  It didn’t differentiate itself from Democrat Party moderates.  In fact, its presidential candidate in many ways was more Democrat than Republican.  Even worse, neither the candidate nor anyone else inside the Party hierarchy showed any passion for anything during the campaign, including core ideals.

If the Republican Party plans to become the majority party once again, it needs to stop listening to the moderates in their Party.  They need to stop pandering to liberals and moderates.  The Party needs to cleanse itself so that it can differentiate itself.  It needs to hold true to its principles and it needs to do so with, strength, conviction, and passion.  It needs to stand up, be honest, and let the voters decide.  No matter how it goes, the Republican Party will win because it will once again have integrity and stand for what have always been its core principles.

If I was a betting man, I would say that the Party will not only have integrity as a result of this approach, but it will also win the election in 2012.
