P.Z. Meyers is an Associate Professor of Biology at the University of Minnesota, Morris.  Professor Meyers considers himself to be an atheist.  Yet, he says that he “Questions everything” (Minneapolis Star Tribune, 8/15/09).

This statement demonstrates something very interesting about atheists.  In fact, by definition, atheists do NOT question everything.  They hold a firmly held belief (faith) that there is no God.  This is not questioning…it is a statement.

By definition, the group of people who actually DO question everything (but remain open to the answers) are agnostics.

As a Psychologist, I am a strong adherent of the power of scientific inquiry.  I also believe that there must be some type of higher power.  It is childish and narcissistic to outright reject any belief, faith, or idea, when we cannot really know the truth.  This approach to truth regarding science and religion is well stated by Kenneth Miller, a biologist at Brown University.  He wrote that “I don’t think that we gain much ground for scientific understanding by arguing that to fully accept science one must reject religious faith.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune, 8/15/09).

Rejecting what is not known makes no scientific sense.  Atheism is in itself a religion.  The faith held by atheists that there is no God is as strong as the faith by people of religion that there IS a God.

Atheism takes its place with fanatical environmentalism, communism, socialism, and fascism as just another fanatical “ism” that is based on nothing but held strongly by true believers.
